Which tall teams can’t jump? Ranking college basketball teams that play smaller (or taller) than their height

Height has its privileges both on and off the court. In college basketball, some teams take advantage of their height and its gifts, which come in the form of rebounds and blocks (amongst other factors). However, other teams do not. Exactly which teams play taller (or shorter) than their actual heights?

Courtesy of Kenpom, I measured the relationship between team height and the following factors: blocks, offensive rebounds, and defensive rebounds for the current 2016-2017 season.

As expected, team height is positively correlated with all three factors (= .24, = .24, and = .44, respectively). I averaged all three factors together, creating an all-encompassing tall-team statistic.

Below are the top ten teams that play taller than their actual heights.

The columns represent each team’s actual height (percentile rank) and how tall they actually play, according to the three factors of offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, and blocks (percentile rank). Lastly, the final two columns represent the team’s average height and their predicted height, according to how tall they actually play.
